Today is my last day at DC PHP. I received an offer from The Bivings Group two weeks ago that was impossible to refuse; they're two blocks from my current residence and they offered me a considerable salary increase. But still, I will miss DC PHP.
I've learned a lot here in the past eight months, about development, about how to design well, and about how development should be done. There is still much left to learn, but the lessons I have learned here are beneficial and important.
Tomorrow I head for ZendCon; see everyone in California!

The report discusses, in detail, the threat commercial over-fishing poses to our oceans. It also ranks supermarkets based on their seafood offerings, and challenges them to do better by reducing the sale of endangered fish species and encouraging sustainable seafood practices.
Congratulations to my fellow team members on getting this project out!

Wow. Just wow.
It's been a crazy week.
Three days of conference. Three days of geeks together, talking about geek things, and drinking bad beer. Not me so much with the drinking, but certainly the talking and geeking out part.
Yesterday we had terrible thunderstorms. So bad it shut parts of the Metro down. Predicted 50% chance of rain today, but since I bought an umbrella it wasn't going to rain.
Invited to speak at ZendCon, a PHP Conference in September in California. Very cool, and quite a resume point (if I can secure the time off).
Today working on the Greenpeace Seafood report. HTML, CSS, PHP, I think some JSP and maybe some ESP or something like that. We release next Friday. Exciting.
Shoutouts to Tony Bibbs, Keith Casey, Mike Ho, Eli White(?) and others who presented phenomenal presentations at DC PHP '08.

I learned some interesting things about PHP this week. They are:
- Register Globals is just foreach($_POST as $k => $v) { $$k = $v }.
- Good planning makes good code and fast development.
- Classes are useful.
- Powerful functions don't have to be long or complicated to be powerful.
- Book knowledge is easy to get. Practical experience is more difficult. But combining practical knowledge with book knowledge can result in new ideas that were before impossible.
The learning never stops...

One of the tasks I've been given at work is taking a good look at the server operating systems and making recommendations for improving our technology infrastructure. After convincing my supervisor to purchase a new copy of the server application produced by Apple (we're an all Mac environment) I brought one of the servers home to install the application on it. But little to my knowledge, Apple requires 1 gigabyte of RAM on the computers, and the box I was building only had 512 megabytes!
*sigh*

A few people asked me last night how my new job was going so I thought I'd let you know.
The new job is going well. I started yesterday. I really had a good time. There's a lot to learn, and I think that's pretty normal, but the people I work with are bright, intelligent people and I really enjoyed my first day.
You can expect to see in the coming weeks some improvements to Almost Georgetown as a result of my job, because I'll be getting better at PHP and finding new, open source solutions that will let me create great new features. Stay tuned...
