Memorial Held For DC Biker
As evidence of the danger of DC streets, a memorial was held last night for Alice Swanson, a biker killed earlier in the week by a trash truck that literally ran right over her.
DC police rarely enforce traffic laws regarding violations when cars and bikers are involved, and the death of Alice Swanson was a stark reminder of the dangers faced by bicyclists and pedestrians alike. Charges have yet to be filed against the truck driver.
That same night, DC city government met to discuss an unrelated pedestrian and bike plan. On the agenda were ways to make the city streets safer, including upping fines for violating traffic laws regarding bike lanes and crosswalks punishable with $500 fines, up from $50 for a first-time offense.

Train Derails in SE Washington
A CSX train carrying coal (probably from West Virginia) derailed today in Southeast Washigton, DC while it crossed a rail bridge over the Anacostia River. No one was reported injured and the bridge survived the accident. The site is a mess, though, as is expected with a load of coal being dumped into the river. Authorities are working with the company to clean up the spill of coal.
