Anyone who's seen Planes, Trains and Automobiles is familiar with the storyline of the worst trip ever home for Christmas. Thankfully, I've never had an experience quite like that, but today's trip home was certainly, shall we say, "special." From a late flight to a full one, to trains not showing up and crazy cabbies, it was quite an adventure.

I'm home visiting for Mother's Day. I surprised my mom with a visit, along with the aid of her friends. Every time I come I remember why I miss California and also some of the reasons I left...

On Monday I head back to Baltimore, and then DC via train, and back to the grind on Tuesday. For those I have a chance to see while I'm here, I'm glad to visit with you, those I was unable to visit, I'm sorry we didn't connect, and those in DC I look forward to seeing you when I return.

If you had asked me on June 18th, 2007 why I was coming here, I would have told you for one reason: to make a difference. I had this idea that lending my voice to the chorus of others would somehow make an appreciable impact on the region and on the society at large. As of today I have been here for eight months less two days, I have been on-again, off-again with Claire, changed jobs, and watched the economy change around me. Thinking about the time spent and the impact not felt, I felt discouraged at what had been accomplished, or not accomplished.

Yesterday was spent getting ready for today's party, and Christmas shopping. I got some great gifts for my brother, grandfather, and mother. I think they'll really like them. We also made lasagna, and went grocery shopping. Today is the party, and tomorrow we head to Fremont for Christmas. Can't wait!

I used my first full day in California to take a trip to San Francisco to visit Ali, and then headed back to Yuba City with Thomas. Ali and I spent most of the day in Emeryville and then the afternoon in San Francisco, where we tried (unsuccessfully due to the line) to ice skate, and then wandered around the Embarcadero.
